This huge square, restored in the 1990s, is named after the supporters of the Union who rallied here during the American Civil War. The 95ft-tall column topped with a figure of Victory in the center of the square commemorates Admiral Dewey's 1898 victory over Spanish naval forces. In addition to a substantial population of homeless people, it is nonetheless a temple of consumerism. Westin St Francis Hotel on the west side of the square played a decisive role in the development of this district.
