Following the traditional layout of medinas, the Great Mosque dominates the centre of the medina in Sfax. The souks, largely unaffected by tourism and frequented by locals, are dotted around the mosque. Situated slightly away from the medina, the residential districts are home to some fine houses, such as the Dar Jallouli, which shows strong Andalusian influence. The kasbah, now home to the Museum of Traditional Architecture, stands on the site of the old ribat.
